Never skip 'make-up-removal' before sleep to have healthy skin

Going to bed with make-up

Remember how our grandmothers used to insist on removing the layers of make-up caking from our faces before sleeping? They were right.

Dr. Eric Schweiger, founder of the Clear Clinic, and Dr. Erin Gilbert, a NYC-based dermatologist confirm "Sleeping in your makeup can result in unnecessary exposure to the free radicals in the environment, which the makeup holds on to.Free radicals cause the breakdown of healthy collagen, which results in fine lines on the skin. Additionally, makeup can clog the pores while you sleep, resulting in the development of acne." So that answers it – it is imperative to remove the makeup.

A single night with make-up on

An oversight of one night may not be very bad for the skin but each passing night of neglect makes the pores clog even more. Dr. Schweiger asserts “Eventually, this can result in the formation of amicrocomedone, which attracts the acne-causing bacteria to your pores."

Premature aging

Dr Gilbert says that the skin needs sleep to recover from the oxidative stress it faces in the daytime. When the skin is loaded with make up at night then one stops the skin from carrying out the “recovery process”. This ignoring of the “recovery procedure” leads to signs of premature aging.

Schweiger concurs that "free radicals from the environment (often in the form of pollution) remain on the skin when you do not clean your face properly at night. Free radicals cause collagen breakdown over time, which results in the development of fine lines and prematurely aged skin."

The eye make-up

Sleeping with eye makeup on can cause the oil glands on eyelids and tiny hair follicles on lashes to get clogged. While sleeping, one can end up with the non-removed eye make-up in the eye leading to severe eye irritation. As Dr. Schweiger says “when these areas become clogged, bacteria can build up and cause inflammation. As a result, small bumps called styes or hordeolums can form. These bumps may resolve spontaneously, but many require treatment from your doctor."

The foundation

The biggest folly is to leave the foundation smeared on the face confirms Dr. Gilbert, who insists "Foundations and thick, oil-based primers are often the worst offenders. They prevent the skin from renewing itself naturally at night, causing blackheads, acne and dullness.”

So however tired you may be, however late it may be never forget to reach out for the cotton swab soaked in a cleansing product to wipe the grime away. Remember make up is not the appropriate partner to go to bed with.
